Ebook reader with tap-to-translate and read-aloud

Read books in English, Italian and other languages in your browser or the installed reader. Click or tap a word, or select a sentence or paragraph, to open a translation beside the text. Save words with their context, add notes and bookmarks, and listen using voices available on your device or browser. Septalingua is built with privacy first. Protecting your data is our priority!

The medical module brings together specialist sources as shown in the table at the bottom of this page. Source language coverage varies. Available medical information can be searched and read without registration. Where permitted, missing language versions can be translated on request and are marked as machine translations. LOINC machine translation is currently unavailable under the licence terms.

You can edit the selected request text and copy a dictionary card with terms, definitions and sources. Registered users can open the translator and AI assistant without a book. AI responses can be copied with the submitted text, context, action and model.

Backup protection

Local and cloud backups can optionally be password protected. Encryption takes place on your device; the password is not sent to the server. Your data security and privacy are our priority.

If you lose the password, the protected backup cannot be recovered.

Connected AI and translation services

Septalingua connects Google Gemini and OpenAI for language explanations and translation, alongside DeepL, Google Translate and Microsoft Translator. Availability depends on account permissions, enabled services, language pair, region and budget. Online services need a connection; the selected AI receives the context shown for the request.

How do I read a book with translation?

Select a word, sentence or paragraph to open the translator and dictionary beside the text. Save words with context to your personal vocabulary, use search, notes and bookmarks. Online translator setup and languages depend on the service.

Can I listen to my book?

The reader uses voices available on your device and in your browser. Choose the language and speaking rate. Voice availability and offline use depend on the device: some voices use online services.

Offline reading and backups

Local books can be read offline once the app shell is prepared. Supported dictionaries, Wiki packs and experimental language models must be installed in advance; available language pairs are limited. Save backups locally or to connected Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox accounts. Automatic library synchronisation is still planned. Backups can be protected with a password. Encryption takes place on your device; the password is not sent to the server. A lost password cannot be recovered.

Supported formats

EPUB, FB2, FB3, PDF, TXT and supported office documents. Translating selected text in PDFs requires a text layer; scanned-page recognition is still planned. Originals stay on your device and you control your exported backup.

How can I understand a difficult text?

Unfamiliar terms appear in more than foreign novels. Open study material, a medical report, legal contract or technical document in a supported format, select a difficult phrase and keep an explanation and note with its context. Medical databases and the first part of the legal dictionary are available; coverage varies by source and language. A dictionary does not replace professional advice.

Planned: sync, OCR and specialist dictionaries

I plan to add cross-device library and reading-progress sync, OCR for scanned PDFs, additional medical and legal dictionaries, more voice options and a readers’ community. Yandex is a separate planned stage, followed by Turkish, Romanian and Czech. Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese and Simplified Chinese are planned after the community launches. These are future directions, with no promised date or universal language-pair coverage.

🤝 How can you help? Every idea and bit of help moves the project forward. 1. Become a tester: send me a request through the feedback form. 2. Suggest an improvement: found a bug or a way to make reading easier? Write to me; you do not need a tester role. 3. Want to thank me for a useful app? Visit the project support page.
