Septalingua Reader

Development progress

0.01.31 · Alpha · 2026-10-17.1

Septalingua grows through real reading needs and readers' feedback. I choose priorities to make the app more useful with every update. Available features are shown in the interface; release dates depend on complexity and testing.

✅ Available now • Nine interface languages: Russian, English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Ukrainian. • Local reading in more than 15 popular formats, text search, bookmarks, notes and personal vocabulary. Books stay on your device for reading. • Translation of selected words, sentences and paragraphs, device-voice read-aloud and data backups. • Working basic AI integration: context-aware translation and an assistant that explains meanings and idioms, analyses grammar, suggests synonyms and explores other meanings. • Installable offline dictionaries, Wiki packs and experimental local models for supported languages; coverage and quality vary.

**Latest update: medical databases, easier input and protected backups** The medical module brings together specialist sources as shown in the [table](#medical-bases) at the bottom of this page. Source language coverage varies. Available medical information can be searched and read without registration. Where permitted, missing language versions can be translated on request and are marked as machine translations. LOINC machine translation is currently unavailable under the licence terms. You can edit the selected request text and copy a dictionary card with terms, definitions and sources. Registered users can open the translator and AI assistant without a book. AI responses can be copied with the submitted text, context, action and model. Backups can be protected with a password. Encryption takes place on your device; the password is not sent to the server. A lost password cannot be recovered. Septalingua is built with privacy first. Protecting your data is our priority!

🛠 In progress • A clearer interface, easier navigation and more intuitive controls. • Better reading on phones and smaller screens. • File and backup handling, profiles and personal cloud storage setup. • Better compatibility with complex EPUB files and documents. **Additional medical databases** We will continue expanding the medical module. Additional sources depend on their content, language coverage and terms of use. **Explanatory legal dictionaries** We are selecting sources and reviewing their content, language coverage and licence restrictions. **Design and usability** Work continues on the interface, settings and key application windows. Join the project, test new features and share your feedback.

⏭ Next priorities • More capable AI translation and assistants, plus support for your own API key. • More interface languages.

🔮 Longer-term plans • Interactive learning, exercises and tests. • A community for reading together, discussion and sharing experiences. • More supported file formats, including input formats for scans and photographs. • Scans and photos: text recognition (OCR), first offline and then online, for scanned PDFs and photographs. Take a photo with your phone or choose an image, review and rotate or crop it, then recognise the text and open it in the reader. • More natural voices and advanced TTS models. • Native Android and iOS apps. • Questions and answers, and ready-to-use language-learning materials.

Protected library — future development

We plan dedicated Windows and Android apps with local encryption of the entire library or selected folders. iOS and macOS apps are planned together. Protected documents, notes and a separate dictionary will be encrypted; online translation and cloud AI will be unavailable for their contents.

A protected library in the browser and installed web app (PWA) is also under consideration. Dedicated apps take priority because they offer greater control over the working environment and more options for protecting confidentiality and preserving information.

Longer-term plans include our own AI models and secure request-processing channels based on Privacy First, including work with information covered by NDAs, professional confidentiality and trade secrets. Architecture, terms and security limitations will be defined and tested before launch. No dates have been announced.
